Getting to and Around Jersey City

Discover the easiest ways to reach Jersey City and explore the city, Manhattan and the surrounding New York metropolitan area.

Jersey City is conveniently located across the Hudson River from Manhattan, making it an excellent destination for visitors arriving in the New York metropolitan area.

One of the biggest advantages of staying in Jersey City is that you can explore much of the area without renting a car.

With PATH trains, ferries, buses and light rail services, getting around is relatively straightforward once you understand the different transportation options.

Flying to Jersey City

Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey is one of the most convenient airports for visitors travelling to Jersey City.

From the airport, you can use rail connections, taxis or other ground transportation to reach your accommodation.

John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport in New York are additional options, although travelling from these airports to Jersey City generally takes longer.

Travelling Between Jersey City and Manhattan

PATH trains provide convenient connections between Jersey City and Manhattan.

Stations at Exchange Place, Grove Street, Newport and Journal Square connect Jersey City with destinations in New York City.

Depending on your route, you can travel to the World Trade Center area or Midtown Manhattan.

PATH operates around the clock, although services and frequencies vary depending on the time and day.

Ferries across the Hudson River provide another option, offering spectacular skyline views during the journey.

Getting Around Jersey City

The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail connects several Jersey City neighbourhoods and waterfront destinations.

NJ TRANSIT buses provide additional connections within Jersey City and to surrounding communities.

Walking is also a pleasant way to explore Downtown Jersey City and the waterfront.

Do You Need a Car?

If you are mainly visiting Jersey City and Manhattan, I recommend using public transportation rather than renting a car.

Parking can be expensive, and traffic around the Hudson River crossings can be heavy.

A car may be useful if you plan to explore more distant destinations in New Jersey.

Plan Your Visit

For a short stay, choose accommodation close to a PATH station and explore Jersey City’s waterfront and downtown area on foot.

If you have several days, combine local sightseeing with trips to Manhattan, Hoboken and other nearby destinations.

Jersey City’s excellent location makes it easy to experience the New York metropolitan area while enjoying a different perspective from across the Hudson River.
